Beautiful Brown Girl was founded by Sonja Tanette Smith in Atlanta, Georgia in 2005.

What began as a small bath and body company created to help those suffering with eczema gradually evolved into something deeper. Over time, Beautiful Brown Girl expanded into branded apparel and now exists as a quiet space for soft-life wisdom, reflection, and encouragement for women navigating life’s many seasons.

The name Beautiful Brown Girl was born out of a deeply personal realization. From the age of nine, while enduring physical abuse at home, Sonja was often called words no child should hear — fat, ugly, dumb, and stupid.

As she grew older, she came to understand that those words were never the truth of who she was. Choosing the name Beautiful Brown Girl became an act of reclaiming dignity, identity, and voice.

Through conversations with other women, she discovered that many carried similar wounds — particularly those shaped by difficult relationships with their mothers or the ache of motherless childhoods. Rather than allowing those wounds to define their stories, she felt called to create a space where women could gather the shards of broken memories and build something meaningful and whole.

Beautiful Brown Girl is rooted in the belief that healing, dignity, and wholeness are possible for every woman — no matter where her story begins.

The foundation of this space rests on Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV): “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Those words serve as a reminder that God works with perfect timing, bringing purpose, healing, and beauty out of every season of life.

Through Beautiful Brown Girl — whether through conversation, reflection, community, or creative expression — Sonja hopes women reconnect with their body, heart, mind, and spirit, and remember who they truly are.
